Sus primeras experiencias como cantante fueron en el coro de la iglesia. Cursó estudios de psicología y trabajó como asistente social. Viaja a Los Angeles y actúa en pequeños clubes. A mediados de los años 60 grabó un LP titulado 1965. Contratado por Reprise, resurgió en 1975 con el LP We Got By obteniendo muy buena crítica, fue comparado con Johnny Mathis.<br />

Después de Glow de 1976, lanzó Look to the Rainbow, disco doble en vivo que llegó al Top 50 en los rankings de álbumes de Estados Unidos. Con Breakin' Away de 1981 ingresó al Top 10, que incluía los hits "We're in This Love Together" y "Breakin' Away". Graba Is for Lover en 1986 con el productor Nile Rodgers y consigue popularidad con el tema del serial televisivo Luz de Luna. Sus siguientes trabajos, como Heaven and Earth de 1992 y Tenderness de 1994 tienen menos éxito.<br />
