Ese mismo año, ella apareció en la primera película sonora de la RKO, Calle Chica (1929) y estuvo brevemente bajo contrato con ese estudio, emitidos en imágenes de la mujer llamada como, La dama se niega (1931) y Tres que amó (1931).


La estatura de sus papeles comenzaron a disminuir a partir de mediados de los años 1930, aunque continuó actuando en personajes de carácter 1948. La última película de Compson fue Here Comes Trouble (1948). Ella se retiró tras actuar en dicho film, y se dedicó, junto a su marido, a la dirección de un negocio llamado "Ceniceros sin límites" hasta su muerte.

Compson se casó en tres ocasiones. Entre 1924 y 1930 estuvo casada con el director James Cruze. Posteriormente se casó y se divorció de Irving Weinberg. Su tercer marido fue Silvius Jack Gall, que falleció en 1962.
