La Historia Secreta de los Mongoles es la obra mongola más antigua que haya sobrevivido hasta nuestros días. Describe la genealogía y las hazañas de Genguis Kan, guerrero que fundó uno de los imperios más vastos de la historia de la humanidad.

Tiene un alto valor literario al contener leyendas, poesía, dichos, del acerbo cultural mongol. También reviste una gran importancia desde el punto de vista lingüístico, al permitirnos entrar en contacto con el idioma mongol de la época.

Texto de la obra

Fue escrita con toda probabilidad en el siglo XIII dne.,[1] pero se ha conservado tan sólo en forma de transcripción al chino. Esta transcripción fue preparada en la segunda mitad del siglo XIV dne., durante la dinastía Ming,[2] a partir del original en escritura uigur,[3] y fue incluida en la Enciclopedia Yongle (Yung­lo ta­tien).

El texto chino consta de la transcripción en sí y además de una traducción literal de cada palabra así como de una traducción libre al final de cada sección o parágrafo. Los parágrafos son 282, organizados originalmente en 15 juàn o capítulos, luego en 12.
