 ==Síntesis biográfica==
 Nace el [[16 de abril]] de [[1821]] en [[Calais]]. Desde niño mostró su gran interés por la pintura; su padre lo impulsó a ingresar en la Escuela de Brujas, estudiando luego en  [[Gante]] y, finalmente, en [[Amberes]], donde fue discípulo del reputado pintor belga [[Wappers]], bajo cuya dirección pintó el lienzo que le hizo famoso, ''Job y sus amigos''.
 === Influencias artísticas ===
 Se traslada a París en [[1840]], permaneciendo tres años en la capital francesa para aprender a dibujar del natural, manifestando en sus primeros trabajos la influencia que ejercen sobre él los maestros flamencos del [[Barroco]] y de la pintura romántica francesa, regresando a [[Londres]] en [[1844]].
 Viaja a [[Basilea]], [[Milán]],[[Florencia]] y [[Roma]] entre [[1845]] y [[1846]], donde comienza a frecuentar a los nazarenos y estudia a fondo la pintura italiana. Lo que supuso un cambio en el cromatismo y en la composición de sus trabajos.
 ===Muerte===
 Fallece en [[Londres]] el [[6 de octubre]] de [[1893]].
 ==Características de su obra==
 Brown se dedicó sobre todo a la pintura histórica y de tema bíblico. Su carácter retraído y solitario, sumado a problemas familiares de índole personal, su interés por los problemas de la época  produjeron una obra intensa cuyos temas cambiaban en tanto que el estilo siempre era el mismo.
 En su trabajo se observa el papel del artista en el desarrollo del Prerrafaelismo, por su estilo radical, original y completamente nuevo. Su obra incluye dibujos, paisajes, retratos, escenas de la vida cotidiana en la [[Inglaterra]] victoriana y los murales que el artista elaboró para el Ayuntamiento de [[Manchester]].
 ==Algunas de sus obras==
 Entre sus obras principales, sobresalen ''Lear y Cordelia'' ([[1849]]), ''Chaucerleyendo la historia de Custance, Cristo lavando los pies de San Pedro'' ([[1851]]), ''El trabajo'' ([[1852]]-[[1868]]) y ''El adiós a Inglaterra'', composición que la crítica considera de manera unánimemente su obra maestra.
 Escribió también algunas poesías, como el afamado soneto The last of England.
