Este lugar es una región predominantemente católica de habla irlandesa del condado de [[Donegal]], al noroeste de [[Ulster]].Cuando arribó a la edad de 16 años, obtuvo una beca para estudiar Teología en la [[Universidad de Glasgow]], luego concluyes sus estudios en la [[Universidad de Edimburgo]] en  [[1690]], luego se traslada a los países bajos y matricula en la Universidad de Leiden  donde se mantiene estudiando por espacio de 2 años.Concluye sus estudios en la [[Universidad de Oxford]], donde permanece también por espacio de dos años

-En 1696 realiza su primera publicación,Christianity Not Mysterious, libro que por criticar las instituciones eclesiásticas ocasionó que fuera procesado por un juzgado en Londres y su libro fuera  quemado en [[Dublín]]. Despues de abandonar  Oxford residió en Londres durante la mayor parte de su vida, aunque continuó visitando periódicamente el continente europeo, en especial Alemania y los Países Bajos.
