 Sin Pantera no se podría entender la evolución del [[rock]] más agresivo de los ‘90, dueños de una postura abiertamente ofensiva contra el establishment y acompañada de un fiero sonido e irresistible potencia, sumado a un groove cargado de esteroides. Y es que la musculatura del rock de Pantera es gruesa. Su lírica es de pura autosuficiencia, cuentos de odio, paranoia, miedo y existencia hostil. El entorno sónico no necesita hablar para sugerir la sentencia “mas fuerte que todo”, y sin embargo, sus orígenes no fueron tan oscuros, aunque si lo es en la nula distribución discográfica de sus primeros dos discos, los olvidados ''Metal Magic'' y ''I´m The Night''. En sus comienzos, esta banda norteamericana formada en plena década de los ’80 en Dallas, Texas, estuvo cercana al hard rock de [[Kiss]] y [[Aerosmith]], para luego adoptar una postura agresiva y radical que la convirtió en una de las más potentes de la escena metalera. Hay dos momentos claves en el diseño de poder en Pantera, la asociación sónica con un estilo de puro heavy a la [[Judas Priest]] y la entrada posterior de Phil Anselmo en las voces.
-En la prehistoria de Pantera siembre figuró la pareja de hermanos Vinnie Paul, en la batería, y Dimebag Darrel en la guitarra. Junto a ellos estaban el bajista Rex y el vocalista de los discos olvidables, Terry Glaze. Y aunque ya con el ''Projects In The Jungle'' estaban definiendo un estilo crudo más allá del glam que los hacía lucir tal y como los grupos con que compartieron cartel ([[Stryper]], [[Dokken]] o [[Quiet Riot]]), faltaba algo que los relacionara con una movida thrash metal pero sin restringirse a tocar con bandas como [[Exodus]], por ejemplo. Pantera pensaba que la definición de un groove heavy moderno, conservando la cuota de agresión thrash, los podía convertir en una banda grande, tal como fue el caso de [[Metallica]], uno de sus principales referentes. En [[1986]] entra Phillip Anselmo y rápidamente se inscriben en un circuito más radical con el sonido urgente del primigenio power metal.

 Esta transformación estilística tan clara, que divide a Pantera en dos etapas (‘80 y ‘90) sucedió a partir de [[1988]] cuando el guitarrista “Dimebag” Darrell rechaza una supuesta invitación para integrarse a [[Megadeth]] y decide concentrarse en la nueva dirección de Pantera. El álbum ''Cowboys From Hell'' probó ser definitorio en la modernización de su sonido y abrazan de lleno una nueva manera de tocar [[thrash metal]]. Había que esperar las nuevas oportunidades que llegarían y Pantera no estaba para desperdiciarlas. La firma con la discográfica Atlantic los embarcó en un masivo tour con [[Skid Row]] y la inmediata publicación del ya legendario álbum del ’92, ''Vulgar Display of Power''.
