==Síntesis biográfica==
Nació en [[Madison]], ([[Kentucky]], [[Estados Unidos]]), el [[12 de febrero]] de [[1942]], y creció en [[Owensboro]].
==Trayectoria literaria==
Graduado en la Universidad de [[Louisville]], comenzó a publicar historietas de horror y misterio, trabajo que ha continuado con el género fantástico. Es muy conocido por sus historias cortas en las que usa una técnica primando el diálogo.
En los años ochenta fundó una revolucionaria librería de pedidos por correo y vivió durante 4 años en una comuna hippie trabajando como mecánico. Ha sido profesor de Escritura Creativa en la New School for Social Research en Nueva York y trabaja como consultor editorial. Es miembro de la Asociación de Escritores Americanos de [[Ciencia Ficción]] y [[Fantasía]]. Ha obtenido los conocidos premios del género, Hugo y Nebula.
Autor de relatos cortos de fantasía, guionista de comics, también ha hecho novelizaciones de películas como "El quinto elemento" o "Jonnhy Mnemonic".
Su trabajo más destacado quizás es su colección de cuentos ''Cuando los osos descubrieron el fuego (In the upper room, [[2000]])'', ganador de ''Nebula, Locus, Hugo y Theodore Sturgeon''.
En la actualidad vive en [[Oakland]], [[California]]. Colabora con distintos medios (radio, prensa, televisión) y la crítica lo ha coronado como sucesor en cuanto a tono satírico de Twain y Vonnegut.
