Hábitat
Cultivo
Es bastante difícil de cultivar, se debe mantener por encima de 15 ° C si se cultiva en sus propias raíces (8 ° C si se injerta) necesitan pleno sol o en sombra de la tarde.Son generalmente injertado porque son de crecimiento lento y muy propenso pudrirse cuando se mantienen en sus propias raíces y aunque no pueden soportar largos períodos de sequedad total, el exceso de agua se pudran, ya que sus sistemas de raíces débiles tienden a ser ineficientes en absorbiendo agua del suelo mojado.Por lo general, molesta ser replantadas y puede tomar mucho tiempo para establecerse.

Estado de conservación
Después de pesquizas realizadas en octubre de 2008 en Paraguay entre Capiibary (Dpto.San Pedro) y Ygatimí / Reserva Natural del Bosque Mbaracayú (Dpto.Canendiyú), a través de Curuguaty (siempre Dpt. Canendiyú),se ha visto que los campos cerrados / limpios de esta zona del país, que constituyen parte del hábitat de Discocactus hartmannii, están desapareciendo debido a su conversión en tierras agrícolas ,un peligro que ya ha sido reportado por Metzing (1994).
