Tras escuchar a varios guitarristas en Estados Unidos, prosigue su búsqueda en Londres, Inglaterra donde se encuentra con su amigo el bajista Jimmy Bain, de Rainbow, quien lo invita a visitar algunos conciertos en Londres, donde conoce a Vivian Campbell, un escocés de sólo 21 años con el cual completa la banda, junto con el propio Bain en el bajo.
Cronología de sus discos
En el año 1983 salió el primer disco de Dio con el nombre Holy Diver. En este disco Ronnie cantaba y tocaba el teclado, lo cual fue solucionado cuando entró a la banda Claude Schnell, ex Hughes-Thrall. Entre las mejores canciones de este disco sobresalen Stand Up and Shout, Straight Trough the Heart, Shame on the Night, Holy Diver, Don't Talk to Strangers y el pegajoso himno Rainbow in the Dark.
Prosigue en 1984 el disco The Last in Line, y el Sacred Hearth en 1985. Ronnie crea una versión al estilo heavy de "We are the World", con el proyecto "Stars", para recaudar dinero para los niños sin hogar. Forman parte de este proyecto Rob Halford de Judas Priest, Neal Schon de Journey, Yngwie Malmsteen, Geoff Tate de Queensryche y grupos como Scorpions, Quiet Riot, Dokken y Motley Crue graban el single "Stars", con participación de cerca de 30 artistas de este género.
En 1986 el guitarrista Vivian Campbell abandonó el grupo para luego unirse a Whitesnake debido a la baja remuneración que recibía. Por Vivian entró Craig Goldy del grupo Giuffria. En el año 1987 sale Dream Evil, el cuarto disco en estudio de la banda.
Reorganización de la banda y nuevo disco
Después del disco Dream Evil, el grupo cambió de algunos de sus integrantes, entre los cuales entró Rowan Robertson de sólo 19 años como guitarrista, con el cual salió un nuevo disco, Lock up the Wolves. Un tiempo después se incorporó el guitarrista Tracy G. Durante esta nueva era, la banda produjo los discos Strange Highways, Angry Machines e Inferno, este último en vivo.
En el año 2000 sale el octavo disco en estudio, Magica, y el noveno, Killing the Dragon el 2002 a través de Spitfire Records. Doug Aldrich fue el guitarrista en este disco.
En el año 2004, salió el décimo disco de estudio, Master of the Moon. En este disco, Jeff Pilson hace de bajo. Pilson había tocado junto con Dio en los discos de los 90.
Muerte de Ronnie James Dio
El 25 de noviembre de 2009, Wendy Dio, esposa y manager, anunció que habían diagnosticado a Ronnie cáncer de estómago.
El 14 de mayo de 2009 Dio fue hospitalizado debido a que el dolor le resultaba insoportable. La muerte de Dio se produjo el 16 de mayo de 2010 a las 7:45 a.m., según fuentes oficiales.
