Síntesis biográfica
Barrington Bayley, fallecido a los 71 años, era un escritor de metafísica, del absurdo "space opera" el subgénero de ciencia-ficción de historias de aventura y romances épicos ambientados en el espacio. Fue quizás el más conocido para aquellos a los que inspiró, entre ellos los escritores M. John Harrison, Iain M. Bancos, William Gibson, Bruce Sterling y los llamados "Cyberpunk".
También conocido como Alan Aumbry, Michael Barrington, John Diamond, P. F. Woods nació en Birmingham y se educó en Newport, Shropshire. Tuvo diversos empleos antes de unirse a la Royal Air Force en 1955, su primer relato publicado, Combat's End, había sido impreso el año anterior en la revista Vargo Statten Magazine.
Sus influencias literarias tempranas incluyen escritores tan diversos como Olaf Stapledon y Balzac, y publicó sus primeros cuentos antes de ser reclutado en la RAF en 1956. La primera historia de adultos que escribió junto a Michael Moorcock fue la paz en la Tierra, publicado bajo el seudónimo conjunto, Michael Barrington, en el Nuevo Mundo en 1959, a partir de entonces escribió regularmente para las revistas de ciencia ficción.
Su primer libro, Star Virus, fue seguido por más de una docena de novelas, su enfoque sombrío y deprimente de la escritura novelística se ha citado como influyente en los estilos de otros autores de ciencia ficción.
Bayley falleció debido a complicaciones del cáncer de intestino grueso que padecía, el 14 de octubre de 2008.
