Julian Gustave Symons. Escritor inglés, dedicó su carrera a la novela de intriga y género negro, alcanzando cierto éxito gracias a sus pastiches de Sherlock Holmes, y a su capacidad para unir la clásica novela de detectives y la novela negra. Las obras de Symons incluyen también algunos trabajos de ensayo literario, como una biografía de Edgar Allan Poe y una historia completa de la novela negra, en la que hace un análisis de las diferentes tendencias del género policiaco.

Biografía
Nacido en Londres en 1912, en una humilde familia de inmigrantes judíos rusos, Symons fue un militante trotskista y poeta en su juventud y sirvió en el Ejército británico durante la II Guerra Mundial. Su primera novela, The immaterial murder case (El caso del asesinato inmaterial), se publicó en 1945.
Sus novelas policíacas indagan en la gestación mental y los resortes psicológicos que mueven a la violencia a personas alejadas de los círculos criminales y lo que más le interesó fueron los motivos que podían inducir al crimen a una persona considerada normal.
Afirmó Symons en una ocasión:
Amigo de George Orwell y de Agatha Christie, Symons encontró una veta turbadora en el género que explotó durante los 50 años de su carrera, literaria. Sus obras no se limitan a una resolución mas o menos ingeniosa de un laberinto de pistas que intentan descubrir al culpable de un crimen, sino que indagan en la gestación mental y los resortes psicológicos que mueven a la violencia a personas alejadas de los círculos criminales.
Ganó varios premios literarios en Gran Bretaña, Estados Unidos y Suecia. Algunas de sus novelas fueron adaptadas a la televisión.
Sus libros más conocidos y traducidos en España figuran El color del asesinato, El círculo se estrecha y Así acabó Salomón Grundy. Otras de sus obras son Los crímenes de Blackheat, Jugando a matar, Treinta y uno de febrero, o El hombre que se mató a sí mismo y a otros.

Muerte
Murió el sábado 19 de noviembre de 1994, en su casa en el balneario de Kent, a los 82 años, víctima de un cáncer.
