Vida laboral

Después de un período de aprendizaje como redactor en un periódico de Columbus, en 1927 empezó a colaborar con The New Yorker, diario donde aparecieron sus dibujos más famosos y sus mejores artículos.

Su estilo informal y flexible revivió en el periódico un inconfundible tono de urbana ironía: el ensayo The Years with Ross (1959) recuerda las etapas más importantes de esta larga asociación artística.

Escribió el libro Is Sex Necessary? (1929), al cual siguió una colección de relatos de impronta autobiográfica que estableció su reputación de escritor humorístico.

En sus primeras obras ya aparecen los temas caraterísticos de su vasta producción.

Colección de extraños dibujos

• The Seal in the Bedroom (1932) es una colección de extraños dibujos de sofisticada simplicidad cuyos protagonistas a menudo son animales, sobre todo perros.

• En Mi vida y mis tiempos difíciles, su mejor colección de cuentos, el autor se examina a sí mismo, con finalidad paródica, en su doble identidad de ingenuo muchacho de Ohio y de desencantado y ya maduro "easterner".
