Dr. Hook (en su inicio Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show). Grupo de rock estadounidense con grandes éxitos musicales en los años 70. Interpretes de románticas baladas como "Sylvia's Mother", "The Cover of the Rolling Stone", "A Little Bit More" and "When You're in Love with a Beautiful Woman", ocuparon primeros lugares en el hit parade.

Biografía
Grupo estadounidense formado con el nombre de Chocolate Papers al final de los 60 en New Jersey. En 1971, año de su descubrimiento, estaba integrado por: Ray Sawyer (1-2-37, Alabama), voz y guitarra; Dennis Locorriere (13-6-49, New Jersey), voz y guitarra; William Francis (16-1-42, California), teclado; George Cummings (28-7-38), guitarra y steel guitar; y John David (8-8-42,New Jersey), batería.
En 1971, el cantante y escritor Shel Silverstein les consigue un contrato discográfico y con dos temas suyos, The cover of Rolling Stone y Sylvia’s mother (n.º 1), triunfan en Estados Unidos. Richard Elswit (6-7-45, New York) a la guitarra y Jance Garfat (3-3-44, California) al bajo completan la banda tras estos dos primeros hits. Después de tres LP’s excelentes y comerciales, Dr. Hook and The Medicine Show (72), Sloppy seconds (72) y Belly up (73), y tras acompañar a Silverstein en su álbum Freakin’ at the freakers ball (73), la banda deja el sello CBS para firmar por Capitol. Se editarán dos álbumes más, recopilatorios de esta primera etapa, Fried face (74) y The ballad of Lucy Jordan (75).
En Capitol, y llamándose simplemente Dr. Hook, John Wolters sustituye a David. Cuando aparece el LP Bankrupt (76), Cummings ha dejado la banda por problemas de nervios, sustituyéndole Bob Henke. A partir de aquí, el grupo entra en una línea de superación y, gracias a un avance estilístico notable, conseguirá volver a los rankings de éxitos. Su línea llena de buen humor y la personalidad de Sawyer (el hombre de un solo ojo) y de Locorriere son la eterna clave de su progresión. A little bit more (76), Makin’ love and music (77) y Pleasure and pain (78) preceden a su excelente LP Sometimes you win… (79), álbum del cual es éxito el tema When you’re in love with a beautiful woman y en el que Henke ha dejado su puesto a «Willard». Éste, a su vez, se irá antes del siguiente LP, Rising (80), donde será sustituido por Rod Smarr (guitarra), siendo éste el primer LP para el sello Mercury. En 1981 editan Live in the UK, en 1982 Players in the dark, en 1983 Let me drink from your well Existen varias recopilaciones de las dos primeras editoras: Street prople, Revisited, Sylvia’s mother, The best, entre otros.
