Síntesis biográfica
Nacido el 10 de septiembre de 1857 en La Salle, Illinois, Estados Unidos.
Dirigió el Allegheny Observatory (1891–1898) y el Lick Observatory, realizando un importante trabajo espectroscópico sobre 120 mil nebulosas. Autor de: Observaciones espectroscópicas de nebulosas (1894).
Es fundador (conjuntamente con George E. Hale) del Astrophysical Journal (1895).
Muerte
Falleció el 12 de agosto de 1900 en San Francisco, California, Estados Unidos.
