Francisco Bret Harte. Fue novelista norteamericano que llevó el realismo primitivo de la vida del Oeste a las letras. Pionero en el Lejano Oeste y periodista en San Francisco, llegó a ser director del Overland Monthly. Un cuento sin pretensiones, La suerte del campamento tumultuoso, lo hizo famoso de la noche a la mañana. Fue cónsul más tarde en Alemania e Inglaterra, donde murió. Más que sus grandes novelas, Gabriel Conroy, Historia de una mina y La herencia de Dedlow Marsh 1889, debe su fama a sus cuentos, truculentos e ingeniosos.

Francisco Bret Harte: (Nueva York, Estados Unidos 25 de agosto de 1836 –. Desde muy joven trabajó como mensajero, minero, tipógrafo, maestro de escuela, periodista y, por último, diplomático y embajador.

Novelista norteamericano que llevó el realismo primitivo de la vida del Oeste a las letras. Pionero en el Lejano Oeste y periodista en San Francisco, llegó a ser director del Overland Monthly. Un cuento sin pretensiones, La suerte del campamento tumultuoso, lo hizo famoso de la noche a la mañana. Fue cónsul más tarde en Alemania e Inglaterra, donde murió.
Más que sus grandes novelas, Gabriel Conroy, Historia de una mina y La herencia de Dedlow Marsh 1889, debe su fama a sus cuentos, truculentos e ingeniosos. Puede inscribirse en un cierto Realismo costumbrista con ciertas de dosis de Romanticismo. En sus obras: Relatos californianos, Nuevos relatos californianos, Croquis americanos, Una ruina en las llanuras y En los bosques de Carquinez, el bandido y el aventurero sustituyen al trampero y al indio de los viejos escritores norteamericanos, dando origen al nacimiento de un nuevo género literario. Murió en Surrey, Inglaterra, a los sesenta y tres años.
