Elgin Baylor Lumpkin por nombre de pila, nació en Octubre 15 de 1975 en la hoy capital de los Estads Unidos de América, Washington DC, es un cantante de R&B y ocacionalmente hace labores como actor. A mediados de los 90' es firmado por la disquera Epic Records y desde entonces ha grabado varios discos y lanzado numerosos singles que lo han hecho uno de los más reconocidos exponentes de este género musical.

Biografía

Luego de asistir en el instituto de Forestville y en el Prince Georges Community College en Largo, ambas en Maryland, dió comienzo a su carrera musical formando parte del un grupo en ese momento conocido llamado Swing Mob, en donde participa en su primer video clip junto a Jodeci. En este grupo conoce a Misssy Elliot y a Timbaland, conocidos raperos de los Estados Unidos, este último se convertiría en uno de sus principales colaboradores durante los 90'. "Pony" como su primer single, perteneciente a su primer album Ginuwine…The Bachelor de 1996, lo mostró a los norteamericanos su suave voz y el estilo innovador en la producción de Timbaland.

Tras su álbum 100% Ginuwine, su segundo, producido en 1999, él y Timbaland se alejaron un tanto, y otros musicos como R. Kelly empezaron a trabajar con él, como productores. En 2001, situó su single "Differences" en la cuarta posición de la Hot 100. En 2002, apareció en el éxito "I Need a Girl (Part II)" de P. Diddy. Luego crearía su propio sello, Bag Entertainment, donde destacaron artistas como Jose Cenquentez y su esposa Solè. Es conocido por descubrir al vocalista Tireh.

Su quinto álbum, Back II Da Basics, salió a la venta en Noviembre 15 de 2005. El primer single del mismo fué "When We Make Love", y el disco debutó en el #12 en la lista de 200 de Billboard, y logró vender cerca de 80.000 copias. "I'm In Love", un tema similiar a "Differences", es el segundo single. También apareció en el álbum Todd Smith de LL Cool J en el single "Ooh Wee".

El artista se casó con Tonya Johnston en Septiembre 8 de 2003 en la ciudad de México, con la que tuvo dos hijas, Story y Dream. Sole ya tenía otras dos hijas, De'jan y Cypress, de una relación anterior, al igual que Ginuwine, aunque él en cambio ya tenía un hijo, llamado Elgin Jr.
