Daniel Louis Aiello Jr. Más conocido por Danny Aiello, fue un actor y productor de cine italo–estadounidense, conocido por Do the right thing (1989), Léon (1994) y Moonstruck (1987). Estaba casado con Sandy Cohen.
Síntesis biográfica
Nació el 20 de junio de 1933 en la Ciudad de Nueva York, Estados Unidos. Se trasladó a South Bronx, un área del Bronx cuando tenía siete años de edad y más tarde asistió a James Monroe High School.
Tras servir durante tres años en el ejército de Estados Unidos, regresó a Nueva York, trabajando en varios empleos, entre ellos como portero del legendario club de comedia, The Improv.
Antes de trabajar como actor fue el presidente del sindicato de los autobuses "Greyhound", hasta que comenzó a interpretar pequeños papeles en cine a partir de 1972.
Si bien su primera película fue Muerte de un jugador (1973), junto a Robert De Niro, en la segunda ya alcanzó una obra maestra: encarnó al mafioso "Tony Rosato" en El Padrino II (1974). Así llegaron títulos como La tapadera (1976); Melodía para un asesinato (1978); Érase una vez en América (1984); El protector (1985) y La rosa púrpura de El Cairo (1985); Días de radio (1987) y Hechizo de luna (1987), películas que desembocaron en su estupenda interpretación en Haz lo que debas, de Spike Lee. Con esa interpretación logró una candidatura al Oscar a mejor actor secundario, galardón que obtuvo finalmente Denzel Washington por Tiempos de gloria. Fue nominado para un Premio Joseph Jefferson de 1976 como Actor en un papel principal por su actuación en That Championship Season, en el Teatro Arlington Park en Chicago, Illinois.
Aiello fue además fue un buen cantante que grabó varios álbumes con una big band.
Tuvo diversos intereses caritativos entre ellos se incluyen Covenant House (una unidad móvil que proporciona alimentos, atención médica en refugios, asesoramiento, educación y capacitación laboral para adolescentes sin hogar), United Way, el Ejército de Salvación, Broadway Cares / Equity Fights AIDS y Frances Aiello, Centro de tratamiento diurno en Brooklyn (llamado así por su difunta madre) que trata a adultos y niños ciegos y sordos jóvenes.
Muerte
Falleció el 12 de diciembre de 2019, a los 86 años de edad, en un hospital en Nueva Jersey, Estados Unidos.
