Testament. Es un grupo de rock que se formó en 1983 en San Francisco, California, Estados Unidos.

Historia de la banda

Testament con Eric Peterson (guitarra), su primo Derrick Ramirez (guitarra), Louie Clemente (batería) y “Zetro” Souza en voces, bajo el nombre de Legacy. En 1984 Derrick deja la banda siendo reemplazado por Alex Skolnick. Al año siguiente editan un demo First Strike Is Deadly, con Steve en las voces, para luego en 1986 cambiar su nombre definitivamente a Testament. Desde ese entonces, Souza deja la banda para integrarse a Exodus y llega en su puesto el vocalista Chuck Billy, para conformar una de las leyendas de la Bay Area de San Francisco, por ser una de las primeras agrupaciones en salir al terreno que Metallica había abierto furiosamente años antes.

Luego de un exitoso álbum debut en 1987, The Legacy, tocan en el famoso Festival de Dynamo en Eindhoven, Holanda, de donde sale su EP Live At Eindhoven. Un año después editan su segundo trabajo The New Order nuevamente con Alex Perialas como productor. Lo importante es que gracias a esta placa con grandes temas como ‘Disciples of the Watch’ o ‘The New Order’, Testament quedó catalogado dentro de las mejores bandas metaleras en el mundo, pues así lo confirma la gira junto a Megadeth, Voivod, Anthrax y Judas Priest, mientras que ese mismo año hacen su aparición en el conocido festival The Monsters Of Rock. Ya en 1989, se nota un cambio en la dirección musical pasando de un furioso speed thrash metal a un estilo mucho más melódico, pero aún inserto en la música radical. Vuelven a grabar nuevamente con Perialas su tercer álbum Practice What You Preach, placa que vendió más de 400.000 copias. Este fue el momento en que Alex Skolnick ya estaba perdiendo interés por el thrash más purista y empezó a empapar a Testament de su estilo abiertamente melódico, entregando para el grupo una particular versión de un depurado power metal. Después de terminar su gira de promoción, entran otra vez al estudio y componen su cuarto disco Souls Of Black (1990). Si bien este álbum se grabó en menos de un mes por el apuro que Testament tenía de hacerlo coincidir con la gira europea del Clash of the Titans, pudieron salir del paso mostrando una gran madurez y versatilidad en canciones como ‘The Legacy’.

En 1991, lanzan su primera producción de videos titulada “Seen Between The Lines”, para que en 1992 aparezca su nuevo esperado disco The Ritual, en el que demostraban como Testament quería conquistar la escena comercial cambiando su estilo desde un thrash metal a un heavy más ‘digerible’ para las masas. Fue lo más lejos que se situaron de sus raíces, aunque no se puede decir que por esto hayan sido despreciados por su público de siempre, tan solo causó un poco de extrañeza y hacía pensar que el asunto podía acabar mal.

Y nada de raro es que sufriendo estas sutiles mutaciones de estilo dentro de lo metálico luego de unos cuantos recitales, Alex y Louie dejaran el grupo debido a diferencias musicales. Así, el primero formó su propia banda Exhibit-A antes de unirse a las filas de Savatage. Los reemplazantes fueron los ex-Forbidden Glen Alvelais en guitarra líder y Paul Bostaph en batería. Esta sería la primera de una sucesión numerosa de cambios en donde sobreviven los verdaderos dueños de la carrera de Testament, Erick Peterson y Chuck Billy. Con dotación completa graban el EP en vivo Return To The Apocalyptic City. Después Bostaph se aleja para integrarse a Slayer, nuevamente llega otro miembro, John Tempesta (ex-Exodus) en su lugar. Tras terminar la gira de promoción de The Ritual, sufren la partida de Alvelais. Para llenar la vacante se inclinaron por James Murphy (Death, Obituary), un guitarrista preciso y de excepción. En la primavera del 1994 aparece su sexto disco en estudio Low, el cual mostraba un gran cambio dentro de la música de Testament, mucho más noventero. El concepto de agresión brutal y técnico Death-Thrash fue la mejor manera de redefinir a Testament para los noventas, la relectura del nuevo testamento acorde a esta legendaria banda de San Francisco.

En 1995 Atlantic Records les cancela su contrato y rápidamente forman su propio sello Burnt Offerings Inc., estrenándolo con la producción en vivo Live At The Fillmore. Aunque justo antes de empezar a componer su séptimo disco en estudio Testament se disuelve, y es así como aparece el primer The Best Of Testament en 1996. Afortunadamente al año siguiente retornan con el ex-Dark Angel / Death, Gene Hoglan, más Glen Alvelais quien volvía al grupo, más el guitarrista original Derrick Ramirez. Al final superan las expectativas y editan Demonic, uno de sus grandes trabajos a la fecha, donde la brutalidad demostrada no era propia en la banda, pero atraía bastante a los seguidores más extremos.

De nuevo cambio en la batería, Hoglan se une a Strapping Young Lad y vuelve Jon Dette, meses después regresa James Murphy, además se anuncia que el gran Dave Lombardo (Slayer, Grip Inc.) y Steve DiGiorgio (Death, Control Denied) participarían como invitados en su mejor álbum a la fecha: The Gathering, el cual muestra un Testament consistente en todo sentido con la urgencia natural de sus primeros días y más brutales que nunca antes.

Con el nuevo milenio, en el 2001, se lanza el The Very Best Of Testament, donde a las recopilaciones anteriores se les agregan los éxitos de “The Gathering”. No obstante, ya no están ni Murphy ni Lombardo, ni tampoco los reemplazantes Steve Smythe y Jon Sullen (ex-Sadus) respectivamente. Luego vendrían tan solo presentaciones en vivo, para reaparecer el 17 de febrero del 2005, con la formación original: Chuck, Eric, Alex, Greg y Louie, en una serie de conciertos memorables y llego de nostalgia que recorren Europa, Estados Unidos y Asia, presentaciones que se plasman en el DVD y CD Testament: Live In London.
