Derek Walcott. Fue un destacado escritor de Santa Lucía, Premio Nobel de Literatura. La experiencia de crecer en la aislada isla volcánica, ex colonia británica, ha tenido una fuerte influencia en su vida y obra.

Síntesis biográfica
Nació en el año 1930 en la ciudad de Castries en Santa Lucía, una de las Islas de Barlovento en las Antillas. Se dice que sus abuelas eran descendientes de esclavos. Su padre, pintor acuarelista bohemio, murió cuando Derek y su hermano mellizo, Roderick, sólo tenían unos pocos años de edad. Su madre dirigía la escuela metodista de la aldea.
Trayectoria
Después de estudiar en el St. Mary's College en su isla nativa y en la Universidad de las Indias Occidentales en Jamaica, Walcott se trasladó en 1953 a Trinidad, donde ha trabajado como crítico de teatro y de arte. A los 18 años hizo su debut con "25 Poems", pero su descubrimiento vino con la colección de poemas "In a Green Night" (1962). En 1959 fundó el Taller de Teatro de Trinidad, que puso en escena muchas de sus obras de teatro tempranas.
Fue un asiduo viajero a otros países, sin escatimar esfuerzos por crear un drama indígena, estimado por él como profundamente enraizado en la sociedad caribeña con su fusión cultural de elementos africanos, asiáticos y europeos. Por muchos años dividió su tiempo entre Trinidad, donde tiene su residencia como escritor, y la Universidad de Boston, donde enseña literatura y composición creativa.
Muerte
Fallece el 17 de marzo de 2017 a los 87 años tras una enfermedad prolongada[1]

Premios y distinciones
Recibió numerosos premios y distinciones, como los siguientes: beca de la Fundación Rockefeller 1957 para investigar el teatro estadounidense; en 1969 recibió una beca de la Eugene O'Neill Foundation-Wesleyan University, y en 1981 de la Fundación John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur.
Fue miembro honorario del American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. Pero sin duda la distinción más importante recibida por Walcott fue el Premio Nobel de Literatura en 1992 «por una obra poética de gran luminosidad, sustentada por una visión histórica, resultado de un compromiso multicultural».
