Roy Kelton Orbison (Vernon, 23 de abril de 1936 – Hendersonville, Tennessee, 6 de diciembre de 1988), apodado «The Big O» y conocido como «Lefty Wilbury» durante su participación en los Traveling Wilburys, fue un influyente cantante y compositor estadounidense de rock and roll, cuya carrera se extendió a lo largo de más de cuatro décadas.

Roy Orbison nació el 23 de abril de 1936 en Vernon, Texas. Comenzó su carrera musical a finales de los años 50, tras fichar en 1956 por la discográfica Sun Records, con la que grabó su primer sencillo, «Ooby Dooby», un tema rockabilly con el que obtuvo unos discretos resultados. Aunque Roy Orbison comenzó como cantante country, pronto pasó al rockabilly. A pesar de ello, el estilo con el que brilló con luz propia fue el de las baladas. Su primer éxito como cantante de baladas fue el tema "Only The Lonely", grabado en 1960.
En la década de los sesenta consiguió más de una decena de primeros puestos en las listas de éxitos. Algunos de los temas que llegaron a lo más alto de las listas fueron «Running Scared», «Crying», «In Dreams», «It’s Over», «Dream Baby», «Candy Man» y «Mean Woman Blues». Aunque sin duda, uno de los temas más escuchados a nivel mundial de Roy fue el de «Pretty Woman», de 1964. En esta época era uno de los pocos músicos capaces de competir con la fiebre generada con los Beatles, la llamada Beatlemanía.
A mediados de los sesenta, y tras fichar por MGM, la fama de Roy Orbison descendió traumaticamente. Las nuevas generacions de adolescantes buscaban otro tipo de música.
En 1966 la vida de Roy Orbison sufrió un duro golpe, al fallecer su mujer Claudette en un accidente de moto. En 1968, la vida le vuelve a golpear, y en el incendio que destrozó su casa, fallecieron dos de sus hijos.
Tras unos años grises, el cine resucitó a Roy Orbison, colocándole en el lugar que se merece. Primero, David Lynch utilizó su tema «In Dreams» para la película «Terciopelo Azul», en 1986. Posteriormente, en 1990 el bombazo de la temporada fue la película «Pretty Woman», interpretada por Richard Gere y la insufrible Julia Roberts. A raiz de esa película, una nueva generación de jóvenes se acercó a la música del maestro Roy Orbison.
En 1988 formó junto a Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Tom Petty y Jeff Lynne el grupo travelling wilburys,con el que llegó a sacar un album «volume one», donde estaba el éxito «handle with care».
En 1989 apareció su álbum póstumo, «Mystery Girl», en el que Roy Orbison recupera el estilo de sus primeros trabajos que tantos éxitos le dieron. El álbum contiene, entre otros temas, «You got it», «In the real world», «A love so beautiful» o «She’s a mystery to me», este último escrito por Bono y The Edge del grupo U2.
Muerte
Roy Orbison falleció el 7 de diciembre de 1988, a causa de un infarto, cuando contaba con 52 años y parecía contar con un futuro pleno de éxitos en su resurgir.
