Europe es un grupo de hard rock que se originó el año 1979 en Suecia.
Sumario
Inicios de la banda
Europe. Inicialmente la banda se llamó “Force”, y estuvo integrada por el vocalista y teclista Joey Tempest, el guitarrista John Norum, el bajista Peter Olsson y el batería Tony Reno. Con esta formación el grupo hizo una serie de maquetas que mandaron a distintas compañías discográficas sin ningún resultados positivo.
Pasados dos años, Olsson abandona la banda e ingresa en su lugar John Levén.
Cambio de nombre de la banda
En 1982 participan en un concurso y al competir ante 4000 bandas, logran ganar el premio mayor que era un contrato para grabar un disco. Es así como Force pasa a llamarse “Europe”. Al poco tiempo ingresan a los estudios de grabación para darle vida a su álbum debut, titulado precisamente “Europe”. De este disco se extrae el sencillo "Seven Doors Hotel", el cual logró situarse dentro del Top 10 de Japón.
Período 1983 - 1993
Un año más tarde ocurren dos cambios dentro de la alineación del grupo, pues sale Tony Reno e ingresan el teclista Mic Michaeli y el percusionista Ian Haugland. Ese mismo año también publican su segunda producción, bajo el título de “Wings of Tomorrow” (1984). De este disco se extrajo el tema "Open Your Heart", con el cual la compañía CBS Records se hizo con la banda ofreciéndoles un contrato internacional en 1985.
En 1985, Europe graba la banda sonora de la película “On the Loose”. Una de las canciones que se incluyen en este material fue el éxito "Rock the Night". Meses más tarde Tempest compone una canción ("Give A Helping Hand") para el proyecto caritativo “Swedish Metal Aid”.
Para 1986 editan el LP “The Final Countdown”, el cual se convirtió rápidamente en un éxito de ventas a nivel mundial (más de 6 millones de ejemplares vendidos). El tema “The Final Countdown” logró ubicarse en el primer puesto en 26 países diferentes, mientras que la balada "Carrie" alcanzó el puesto número 3 en la lista Billboard de los Estados Unidos. Para ese entonces, John Norum decide alejarse de Europe para iniciar su carrera como solista. Así que en su reemplazo ingresa Kee Marcello.
Durante 1987 la banda recorrió el continente europeo con una extensa gira que llegó también a los Estados Unidos.
Un año más tarde sale a la venta el álbum “Out of This World” (1988). Este disco logró vender dos millones de copias, y para su promoción se organizó una nueva gira en USA al lado de Def Leppard y otros artistas como Bon Jovi, Skid Row y Vixen.
A fines de 1989, Europe realizó una gira en el famosos local “Whisky a Go Go” de California bajo el seudónimo de “Le Baron Boys”. Este nombre fue utilizado más tarde para titular algunas demos grabados durante 1989-1990. Ya en la década de los 90 aparece el LP “Prisoners in Paradise” (1991), y un año más tarde se produce la separación del grupo. A partir de ese momento tanto Tempest, Norum y Marcello lanzaron sus álbumes en solitario, mientras que los demás miembros participaron en distintos proyectos paralelos junto a otras bandas. En 1993 sale a la venta un disco recopilatorio titulado “1982-1992”. Para la celebración del milenio, Europe se reúne para tocar la noche de año nuevo en Estocolmo.
Período 2003 - actualidad
Pero en el 2003 la banda vuelve a reunirse oficialmente y poco tiempo después realizan una gira por distintos países europeos. En el 2004 editan un nuevo álbum titulado “Start from the Dark”. A raíz de la aparición de este nuevo disco, la banda vendió 600.000 copias y recibió buenos comentarios por parte de la crítica. Ese mismo año sale al mercado un disco recopilatorio bajo el título de “Rock the Night: The Very Best of Europe”. Dos años más tarde nace el disco “Secret Society” (2006) y a fines de año tocan en vivo en un programa rumano la noche de año nuevo e inician el 2007 con una presentación en Albania.
