Síntesis Biográfica
Su infancia
Nació en Harlem, Nueva York, hijo de Elvira Sánchez, de la que se cree que era una bailarina de Puerto Rico con ascendentes cubanos, y de Sammy Davis, Sr., un artista afroamericano; los dos formaban pareja de baile de vaudeville. Durante sus primeros tres años estuvo básicamente a cargo de su abuela y, cuando sus padres se separaron, para no perder su custodia, el padre se lo llevó de gira. De él y de su tío Will Mastin aprendió a bailar, terminando por formar con ellos el Will Mastin Trio.
Aunque constantemente protegido por Mastin y su padre de los ataques racistas, durante su alistamiento en el ejército norteamericano en el periodo de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, Davis sufrió inevitablemente el ser objeto de fuertes prejuicios raciales. Esta situación, constante a lo largo de buena parte de su carrera, consiguió ser suavizada por su talento artístico, mediante su participación en un grupo de espectáculo dentro del ejército.
Su carrera artística
Sammy Davis, Jr. optó al cantar por un estilo enérgico y directo, poco adicto a sutilezas microfonicas ni a remilgos inocuos. Desde esa actitud supo granjearse el apoyo de un publico multirracial y sus actuaciones eran por lo general muy aplaudidas.
Capaz de lo mejor y de lo peor, en su canto hay ecos de Billy Eckstine, de Nat King Cole o incluso del mismísimo Ray Charles. Formó parte del celebre clan de Frank Sinatra surgido en los años cincuenta en torno al circulo de amistades del matrimonio Bogart-Bacall y formado entre otros, además de por el propio Sinatra, por Dean Martin, Peter Lawford, Shirley McLaine o Joey Bishop.
Durante los años sesenta y setenta participa en numerosos proyectos musicales, representaciones artísticas e incluso en algunas películas al lado de sus amigos, Dean Martin o Frank Sinatra. Graba varios discos con la orquesta de Count Basie y es especialmente bueno para el jazz, el titulado: "Our Shining Hour" grabado para Verve en 1965. Su película mas famosa se hizo en 1964 bajo el titulo de "Robin and the 7 Hoods".
Su muerte
Davis murió en Beverly Hills, California, el 16 de mayo de 1990 por complicaciones de su cáncer de garganta, a la edad de 64 años. Fue sepultado en el cementerio "Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery" en Glendale, California al lado de su padre y de Will Mastin.
Nos cuenta Dora Nigro, directora del Café Raventós y miembro de la Fundación Amigos del Teatro Popular Melico Salazar, que durante el concierto de anoche, Abril 06, 2011, en el Teatro Popular Melico Salazar, en San José, Costa Rica, Viki Carr contó sobre una persona que admiraba mucho y que al fin se le dió la oportunidad de cantar con él, y otros famosos.
Pues cuenta que llega el anhelado día y ella muy emocionada por compartir el escenario con tan grande estrella, Sammy Davis Jr.!, cuando de pronto llega un telegrama donde Sammy Davis Jr. les dice que lo siente porque no va a poder estar ahí ya que estába en el hospital. "Ese día muere por culpa del cigarro..." comenta Viki Carr.
En 2001 fue honrado con un Grammy, Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
