Pola Negri nació el 3 de enero de 1894 en Janowa, Polonia.
Inicios
Sus inicios en el mundo del espectáculo fueron como bailarina. En el cine trabajó en su país natal bajo la dirección de Aleksander Hertz; más adelante en Alemania, en 1917, en el teatro gracias a Max Reinhardt, y en el cine con Ernst Lubitsch. Este último hace de ella una verdadera estrella (Los ojos de la momia, 1918; Carmen, id.; Madame du Barry, 1919).
Trabajo
En Hollywood trabaja en lujosas producciones, pensadas para ella (La bailarina española The Spanish Dancer, H. Brenon, 1923; Hotel Imperial M. Stiller, 1927). Pero su creación más destacada es la de Catalina de Rusia en La frivolidad de una dama (Lubitsch, 1924).
Valentino tuvo una relación sentimental con ella. Mujer con un carácter apasionado tenía pocas posibilidades de sobrevivir en el cine sonoro. La gran producción, La reina Draga (A Woman Commands, Paul Stein, 1932), fue un fracaso. Regresa a Alemania donde tiene un buen papel en un buen melodrama de Willi Forst, Mazurca (1935). Regresaría de nuevo a Hollywood y a esporádicas interpretaciones secundarias.
Fallecimiento
Pola Negri falleció el 1 de agosto de 1987 en San Antonio, Texas (Estados Unidos).
