Síntesis biográfica
Nació en Cambridge, Massachusetts, Estados Unidos el 15 de noviembre de 1940.
Asistió a la Brooks School en Massachusetts. Se graduó en la Universidad de Yale y luego de esto estudió en la Clinton Playhouse en la Sorbonne de Paris y en el American Actors Workshop. Participó en numerosas obras de teatro como Much Ado About Nothing de Joseph Papp, y Hamlet. Debutó en la pantalla grande en el film Fitzwilly del año 1967. Protagonizó junto a Katharine Hepburn la película para televisión The Glass Menagerie en la que también participó Michael Moriarty a quien Waterston reemplazaría muchos años después en la serie Law & Order.
Fue seis veces nominado para los premios Emmy y ganó un Golden Globe y un Screen Actors Guild Awards. Uno de sus papeles más recordados en la pantalla chica es el de Jack McCoy en la exitosa serie Law & Order. También ha dado vida a Forrest Bedford en I'll Fly Away y tuvo participaciones en numerosas series. Prestó su voz para dar vida al Dr. Kaplan en la serie animada Family Guy . Ha narrado el documental de NBC The Great Race y parte del documental de PBS Lewis & Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery. En 2008 interpretó a Polonius en la producción de Hamlet de Shakespeare in the Park. Su actuación en esta obra fue excelentemente recibida por la crítica. También es un activista humanitario. Participa de organizaciones como Oceana, Refugees International, Meals on Wheels y The United Way.
